Memories 1

As I said in my previous post, it’s 3 years ago. I will try to write more often the coming weeks to tell the story of what happened, as it has shaped my life in an unbelievable way. However, I can’t make any promises, as things are certainly not improving and the fatigue is an ever growing burden.

It is almost to the day 3 years ago that I went to see a surgeon. Since the beginning of February I suffered from a fast growing swelling, just outside my sphincter. According to my GP a haemorrhoid, nothing to really be worried about. But soon it had the size of a chicken egg, so I decided to go and see a surgeon. His conclusion, a haemorrhoid; let’s see how it develops, it might even shrink spontaneously.

Unfortunately, I forgot to tell him about my latex allergy. So that day was the start of 3 increasingly painful weeks, as the swelling started to ulcerate… It were the last weeks before the next Dutch ICT conference and I was also preparing a presentation as discussant for a World Bank project at the WHO. Life suddenly became somewhat complicated. Funny though, pain-related memories seem to get erased by the system, for this was also the time that I started to take ibuprofen like candy. For over half a year I took an average of 3000+ mg daily. But I can’t recall the pain.
